The regulations would limit short-term plans to 3 months rather than one year of coverage.
President Biden’s administration recently proposed a number of regulations for short-term healthcare plans. The proposed rules would revert short-term coverage to the three-month timeframe that President Obama’s administration instituted in 2016, providing an option to renew for one month.
President Trump’s administration lengthened the coverage in 2018 to 12 months with an option to renew for three years.
“Short-term plans are intended to provide temporary coverage as people transition from one source of coverage to another,” White House domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden said. She stated that the previous change allowed companies “to take advantage of loopholes and sell junk insurance for much longer than intended.”
